What is Two-Step Verification?
Two-factor verification is a security measure that requires an extra code when you log in. When enabled, Facebook will require a code from your mobile phone during login. It is very important you activate and use it on Facebook.
How to Activate Two-Step Verification in Facebook
- Log into Facebook on your computer: The quickest way to enable this extra security is by logging into your Facebook account on a computer. Click Here To Login
Open the Settings menu: Click ▼ on the bar at the top of the page and select “Settings”.
Select the Security option in the left menu: This will open the Security Settings page.
Click the Edit button next to the “Use two-factor authentication” option. This will open the two-factor authentication Window.

Click on the Get Started button: This will begin the setup process for two-factor Authentication.
- Chose a verification method:
You can choose between a reviving a code via a text message or an authentication app.
Text messages are easier to use than authentication apps, but they are less secure.
Authentication apps are more secure, but they are harder to use than text messages.
If you use an authenticator app, you can get codes from it even if you don’t have a cell signal, but if you use text messages, then you need to have cell service in order to receive the code.
No matter which option you chose, both are more secure than having a password alone.
- Using Text Messages:
Enter your mobile number (if prompted): You need to have a phone number associated with your Facebook account.
Facebook will send your code to this number if you can’t use the Code Generator tool. You can’t turn two-factor security on without entering your phone number.
You’ll be sent a text when you enter a new number. Enter the code that gets texted to you to verify your number.
Enter your password (if prompted). You’ll need to enter your password here to verify your identity.
Verify your phone number. Enter the code that Facebook texted you to verify your number.
Decide if you want to get notifications about new posts, messages, etc. Afterward,
Click on Finish.
- Using an Authenticator App:
Download an authenticator app: Simply search your phones app store for “Authenticator”, and download the one that you think would be a good fit for you.
Scan the QR code that is displayed by Facebook: Your authenticator app should be able to scan a QR code with the camera of your phone.
If you can’t scan the code for some reason, enter the code into the app that Facebook displays. Afterward, follow the directions in the authenticator app to add the account.
Enter the code displayed by the app: This is to verify that the QR code was scanned correctly.
Type in your password (if prompted). Then click Submit. Afterward, just click Finish and you’re done!
- Setting Up Recovery Codes:
Understand what recovery codes are: Recovery codes are special one-time use codes that you can use in place of your two-step verification code if you can’t get your verification code for some reason.
For example, if you use text message authentication for two-step verification, then you can use these if you ever don’t have cell signal, or you can use these codes if you ever lose your cell phone.
Navigate to the two-factor authentication menu: Go to Settings > Security and Login > Two-Factor Authentication and then click on Edit next to the option for “Use two-factor authentication”.

Scroll down to the bottom and click on Setup next to “Recovery Codes”.
Enter your password (if prompted).
Click on Get Codes.
Copy down or print the recovery codes. You can store these codes in your wallet or the bag and use them whenever you don’t have access to your phone.
You can keep these codes at home if you know that you won’t need them so that it is less likely that they will get stolen.
If you think that your recovery codes were compromised, or if you used your codes all up, then you can head back to this screen and click on “Get New Codes” to change all of your recovery codes.
